Salvatore Cannizzaro Immigration Records15 year old Salvatore Cannizzaro and his 19-year-old brother Michele departed Messina aboard the S.S. Giulia on June 19, 1906. For some reason, Salvatore claimed he was 16 years old. They arrived in New York on July 6, 1906 (a 17 day journey). They came from Militello, Italy and both professed to be blacksmiths. They paid for their own passage and each carried $12 with them. Michele and Salvatore said they were going to visit their father Sebastiano Cannizzaro at 2 1/2 (?) Monroe Street in New York. The record below shows they were detained at Ellis Island for one day, waiting for their father Sebastian to come and get them. The record also shows Sebastiano was actually living at 31 Cherry Street, one block from Monroe Street. They were each given 2 breakfasts, dinners and suppers. Born in Militello on February 22, 1891. Although Salvatore's birth record shows he was born March 1, 1891, it's not surprising this says February 22. The family always celebrated his birthday on George Washington's birthday (February 22). He now resides (in July of 1914) at 418 East 14th Street. This is where Francesca (Nanny) lived with her Russo family and where she and Salvatore lived after their marriage on October 25, 1913. The document says he arrived on the vessel named Germania on or about July 8, 1905. As you can see above, he arrived on the Giulia on July 6, 1906. The Germania sounds familiar. That's because Salvatore's cousin, Sebastiano Cannizzaro (Joe's father), arrived aboard the Germania in 1907. |
